6534 Filter Element Application

The 6534 is our most popular filter element. This filter is a 4 segment element for use in our popular 1000 series filter housing as well as in equivalent competitive housings. This filter is applicable to the filtration of oils and has a nominal filtration rating of 1-5 microns. Typical applications would involve oils of 100 -500 SUS (30 - 100 Cst) at temperatures up to 270 F.

DIRT HOLDING CAPACITY
In some applications COMO 6500 series filter elements have demonstrated dirt-holding capacities in excess of 40 pounds. However, in the typical applications where a 6534 element would be used, a solid contaminate loading of several pounds may be anticipated. Since the solid holding capacity of an element is determined by factors such as the element configuration, fluid flow rate, particle size distribution, cake porosity, water content, and operating pressure; it is difficult to estimate the ultimate filter element holding capacity for a specific application.

WATER ABSORBENCY
6534 filter element typically will remove and retain up to 1 gallon of water from hydraulic oils. At Retention quantities up to .75 gallon, the oil discharged from the filter will typically remain dry even with wet oil in. This property makes COMO filter elements ideal for hydraulic filtration systems, especially for dirt and moisture intolerant servo, precision, and high reliability hydraulic systems.

BETA RATIO
Filtration beta ratios are not the best indication of filter performance in multipass-bypass filtration systems using depth type filters. Total filtration system performance in determined more by total fluid volume and flow rate through the filter system rather than by filter beta ratio. In these types of applications filtration performance is not substantially enhanced by beta ratios over 10.

Typical beta ratios for a 6534 filter element:
.1 - 1u
1 - 2u
3 - 5u
5 - 10u
10 - 25u
25 - 50u
<10
>10
>25
>100
>500
>5000
FLOW RATE
The recommended flow rate for the 6534 filter element is 2.5 G.P.M. in light hydraulic oil. In heavier oils, flow may be .5 - 1.5 G.P.M. In very light oils, such as fuel oils, the filters may be used at flow rates as high as 5 G.P.M. The recommended rule of thumb is: the flow rate at normal operating temperature should be such that the differential filter pressure on a new element is in the range of 15-30 PSI. Selecting a combination of filters and flow rate to yield results in this range will result in maximum filter life.
